A dehydrated and malnourished koala has been miraculously rescued from a cave after being swept away in recent wet weather.

The adult koala was rescued from a cave in Victoria after wild weather smashed Victoria last week.

The marsupial was first spotted by a kayaker along a cliff face on the Glenelg River – which borders South Australia.

Bucky the koala was rescued and transported to Werribee Open Range Zoo, where the cuddly creature received urgent medical attention.

The animal has since been released back into the wild after successful treatment.

Senior veterinarian Dr Natalie Rourke believed the koala had slipped off a tree in the Victorian storms, falling into the river below before washing up into the cave.

‘The koala was quickly becoming weak from starvation because he had no access to his daily eucalyptus diet while trapped in the cave,’ she told 9News.

‘Koalas are not natural swimmers, so without intervention, it could have drowned attempting to exit the cave to find food.’
