Smoky blaze breaks out at Midtown newsstand

The FDNY said it was called to 42nd Street and 5th Avenue around 4:15 p.m. when the stand caught on fire.

A thick plume of smoke billowed from the blaze that was battled by 22 cops and simmered down by around 4:45 p.m., the FDNY said. The newsstand was only about 3-by-5 feet, officials said.

Video posted to Twitter by Nicole Vitale shows dozens of people gathered across the street, filming the smoke.
