Rep. Jerrold Nadler on Wednesday grilled Robert Mueller at the House Judiciary Committee whether the special counsel’s report cleared President Trump of obstructing his investigation.
“That is not what the report said,” Mueller, 74, said.
Nadler, reading from the 448-page report, asked if he had confidence that president “clearly did not commit obstruction of justice,” adding,”Does that say there was no obstruction?”
“No,” answered Mueller.
“In fact, you are actually unable to conclude the president did not commit obstruction of justice, is that correct?” Nadler asked.
“We at the outset determined that we – when it came to the president’s culpability we needed to go forward only after taking into account the OLC opinion that indicated that a president – a sitting president cannot be indicted,” Mueller said, referring to the Department of Justice’s Office of Legal Counsel.
Nadler then asked if he exonerated the president.
”No,” Mueller responded.
The New York-born Mueller graduated Princeton with a bachelor’s in politics in 1966, and earned his master’s in international relations from New York University the following year. After that he served in the Marines in Vietnam, receiving the Bronze Star, two Navy Commendation Medals, the Purple Heart and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry.
he returned home and went on to graduate from the University of Virginia Law School in 1973.
His testimony continues throughout the day before both the House Judiciary and Intelligence committees.
