NYPD salutes slain cop Anastasios Tsakos as his body heads home

Slain NYPD officer Anastasios Tsakos was sent off with a salute from hundreds of New York’s Finest on Thursday as his body was transported to his family on Long Island for a funeral service next week.

A phalanx of NYPD motorcycles and squad cars escorted the ambulance as it left the city Medical Examiner’s Office two days after the veteran cop was struck and killed by a drunk driver on the Long Island Expressway while directing traffic.

“Right now, there are two families that are in mourning and suffering,” Inspector Nicole Papamichael, head of the NYPD Highway District, said Thursday. “The Tsakos family — my heart goes out to them — and the NYPD family.

“We’re suffering a tremendous loss, and he can’t be replaced. A wonderful man, a wonderful father, and a wonderful cop. One of the hardest workers I ever met.”

She said Tsakos won more Officer of the Month honors than any other cop in Highway 3.

Tsakos’ family said there will be a wake for the cop Monday at Paraskevi Green Orthodox Shrine Church in Greenlawn from 2 to 9 p.m., followed by a funeral at the church at 10 a.m. Tuesday.
