The missionary who was killed by a tribe on a remote island in the Indian Ocean may have been trying to bring about the apocalypse.
John Allen Chau, 26, who was killed in a hail of arrows as he went ashore on North Sentinel Island for a third time on November 17, belonged to a Kansas City-based group called All Nations Family.
The group subscribes to the belief that spreading the word of God to ‘all nations’ will cause the second coming of Jesus, and works to speedily meet that goal.
The second coming of Jesus is thought to immediately precede the apocalypse, which is a religious event where Jesus will take all of his followers to heaven, leaving behind those who have not accepted him as a savior to ride out horrific conditions among the worst sinners.
This belief is expressly stated in the evangelical manifesto called the Lausanne Covenant, which All Nations’ statement of faith notes that it upholds.
That stated belief, coupled with a bible verse in Chau’s last letter to his parents, and a blog post from All Nations seems to suggest he was seeking apocalypse by taking Christianity to the remote tribe.

The Lausanne Covenant was drafted in 1974 at the First International Congress on World Evangelization in Lausanne, Switzerland.
The convent’s affirmation of faith states, in relevant part, in point 15:
‘We believe that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly, in power and glory, to consummate his salvation and his judgment.
‘This promise of his coming is a further spur to our evangelism, for we remember his words that the gospel must first be preached to all nations.’

In a blog post honoring Chau’s life and service, All Nations’ International Executive Leader Dr. Mary Ho first touted the service of their lost member.
‘John was a gracious and sensitive ambassador of Jesus Christ who wanted others to know of God’s great love for them,’ Ho said.
‘As we grieve for our friend, and pray for all those who mourn his death, we also know that he would want us to pray for those who may have been responsible for his death.’

Then, in the final sentences, Ho seems to imply that the word of God reaching ‘the unreached’ ( a term commonly used in evangelical circles to refer to those who are not familiar with Christianity), will result in eternal spiritual reward when the right times comes, possibly referring to Jesus returning to Earth. The post (shown) reads at the bottom: ‘We remember too, how throughout church history, the privilege of sharing the gospel has often involved great cost. We pray that John’s sacrificial efforts will bear eternal fruit in due season’

Additionally, Chau’s final letter to his parents included a reference to Revelations 7:9-10, which reads:
‘After this I beheld, and, lo, a great multitude, which no man could number, of all nations, and kindreds, and people, and tongues, stood before the throne, and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, and palms in their hands; And cried with a loud voice, saying, Salvation to our God which sitteth upon the throne, and unto the Lamb.’
The bible verse seems to describe the scene of the Second Coming, but only ‘after this,’ possibly meaning after Chau had done his part to reach ‘the unreached’ on that island.

Chau had traveled to the area to ‘share the love of Jesus,’ Ho said. ‘He wanted to have a long-term relationship, and if possible, to be accepted by them and live amongst them.’
Ho has said the Indian government had lifted restrictions on traveling to the island in August, and that Chau had not broken any laws.
This has since been refuted by geopolitical expert Brahma Chellaney, Professor of Strategic Studies at the New Delhi-based Center for Policy Research, who said Chau ‘violated India’s aboriginal and forest protection laws.’
‘He repeatedly trespassed on this island, and they lost their patience with him,’ Chellaney told the Washington Post.
‘There is faith, and there is mental illness.
‘He didn’t understand the line between faith and doing something that’s absolutely nutty.’

Indian police have not yet retrieved Mr Chau’s remains and have said they do not want to disrupt the tribe or provoke more violence.
They believe they have located the spot where he is buried, going by the statements from the fishermen Chau paid to take him to the North Sentinal Island.
Tribal rights activists have called for Chau’s body to remain on the island, as a recovery effort would be ‘incredibly dangerous’ for both Indian officials and the Sentinelese, who face being wiped out if any outside diseases are introduced

Survival International, which seeks to protect the rights of tribal peoples, said the risk of a deadly epidemic of flu, measles or other outside disease is very real if outsiders land on the island.
Indian ships monitor the waters around the island, trying to ensure that outsiders do not go near the Sentinelese, who have repeatedly made clear they want to be left alone.
Police say Chau knew that the Sentinelese resisted all contact by outsiders, firing arrows and spears at passing helicopters and killing fishermen who drift onto their shore.
Chau paid fishermen to take him near North Sentinel, using a kayak to paddle to shore and bringing gifts, including a football and fish.
Scholars know almost nothing about the island, from how many people live there to what language they speak.
The Andamans once had other similar groups, long-ago migrants from Africa and Southeast Asia who settled in the island chain, but their numbers have dwindled dramatically over the past century as a result of disease, intermarriage and migration.
Five fishermen, a friend of Chau’s and a local tourist guide have been arrested for helping Chau.
Chau, whose friends described him as a fervent Christian, attended Oral Roberts University in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Before that he had lived in southwestern Washington state and went to Vancouver Christian High School.
In an Instagram post, his family said it was mourning him as a ‘beloved son, brother, uncle and best friend to us.’ The family also said it forgave the tribe.
