Labour’s Lloyd Russell-Moyle was stopped by two female Serjeant at Arms staff who took back the symbolic rod.
His dramatic protest came after Theresa May announced she was delaying the Brexit vote.
As MPs gasped in shock the Speaker expelled him for the day.
Mr Russell-Moyle later tweeted: “Thankfully they haven’t locked me in the Tower of London.”
The MP told the PoliticsHome website: “I think the way Government has treated Parliament is outrageous.”
MPs cannot pass laws if the mace is missing.
Tory Michael Heseltine — nicknamed Tarzan — waved the mace over his head in 1976.
