Is this Britain’s wokest cop? Superintendent pictured wearing ‘ever so colourful’ rainbow helmet on patrol in Cambridge

  • Superintendent James Sutherland was wearing headgear on Cambridge patrol
  • He posed for International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia
  • Supt Sutherland was also pictured wearing the helmet at an Ely Pride event
  • Critics called it ‘woke’, ‘virtue signalling’ and asked where ‘neutrality’ had gone

A police force was accused of putting its woke agenda ahead of crime prevention yesterday after tweeting photos of a senior officer in a rainbow helmet.

Superintendent James Sutherland was wearing the ‘ever so colourful’ headgear on patrol in Cambridge.

Critics hit out at the stunt, with comments including ‘where has the neutrality gone?’ and ‘how about tackling crime instead of virtue signalling?’

Another said: ‘A woke photo opportunity. The public would just like the police to “police”.’

And a former Met officer wrote: ‘We were not allowed to wear personal pin badges… How are police now allowed to promote some groups above others?’

Cambridgeshire Police uploaded the photo on Monday to coincide with the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia.

Supt Sutherland was also pictured wearing the helmet in August 2020 during an Ely Pride event.

Cambridgeshire Police said it is ‘committed to being inclusive’ and claimed the helmet, made by local students, ‘has no political message’.
