Great-grandma, 91, tries her first ever McDonald’s… and she's lovin' it

A GREAT-grandma loved her first McDonald’s — at the age of 91.

Eleanor Smith had never tried a takeaway before her care home took her on a post-lockdown surprise trip.

Widow Eleanor, who has two children, seven grandkids and ten great-grandkids, enjoyed a hash brown at a drive-thru.

She then had a Big Mac meal and apple pie pud delivered to her Sunrise of Sonning care home in Berkshire a fortnight later.

Eleanor, who went to the drive-thru with two other residents, said: “I was hoping to have fries, but it was too early.

“So they had to choose something from the breakfast menu, and the hash brown seemed the best option. I was very pleasantly surprised by how it tasted and I’d love to have it again.

“I encouraged others in our care home to have that experience, although it might be difficult for those in wheelchairs.”

Eleanor was married for 55 years before her husband died 12 years ago.

She said he liked chips before they got hitched but said: “I forbade him from having any fried foods.”

The visit to Reading last month was Eleanor’s first trip out in eight months.

She said: “To see the outlying villages and so many people being sensible and enjoying themselves along the side of the Thames was a lift to the spirits.”

A McDonald’s spokesman said: “We look forward to welcoming her back soon.”
