Grant Shapps reveals his ‘upbeat and optimistic’ father has died aged 91 – two years after surviving hospital battle with Covid

Grant Shapps paid tribute to his ‘upbeat and optimistic’ father today after he died aged 91.

The Defence Secretary said he had endured a ‘tough few days saying goodbye to my dad’.

Mr Shapps said the family would ‘hugely’ miss Tony, adding: ‘May his memory be a blessing.’

The Cabinet minister’s father survived a battle with Covid two years ago after picking up the virus while he was being treated in hospital.

Mr Shapps told at the time how he was unable to visit the retired businessman for two months due to pandemic restrictions.

Mr Shapps senior ran an audio video equipment business with his wife Beryl until he retired aged 76 

Mr Shapps is expected to miss questions in the Commons this afternoon as he grieves with family. 

He received condolences from across the political spectrum this morning after posting the news on the X social media site.

‘A tough few days saying goodbye to my dad, who passed away Sunday evening,’ he wrote. 

‘At 91, he remained as upbeat and optimistic as ever right until the end. He will be hugely missed by me, our entire family, and all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing.’ 

Mr Shapps senior ran an audio video equipment business with his wife Beryl until he retired aged 76.
