The bust-up came at the top-secret Faslane dockyard.
The HMS Artful lieutenant, said to be responsible for sonar, tactical and communications systems, was said to have been harassed by three men from rival sub HMS Ambush.
Two junior seamen came to her aid but one was headbutted and the officer, said to be in her 20s, was elbowed.
The row may have been sparked by boat rivalry or comments about women in the submarine service. A Navy source said: “It was unsavoury. Jobs are at risk here.”
Two Ambush crewmen were already thought to have left the service. And in a bid to keep it under wraps, witnesses had to sign confidentiality agreements.
The Navy confirmed Royal Naval Police were investigating an “alleged incident involving members of a Scottish-based unit”.
