British tennis player Dan Evans has wowed fans with the ‘shot of the year’ during a qualification match for the Australian Open.

The 28-year-old star from Birmingham competed against Austrian Jurij Rodionov at Melbourne Park on Thursday to secure a position in the final qualifying match ahead of the Australian Open.

But the talk of the town was his groundbreaking behind-the-back wonder shot which left fans in awe.

Rodionov was likely sure he had won a point when he slotted the ball over Evans’ head who was moving towards the opposite direction.

To the Austrian’s dismay, Evans miraculously pivoted and spun his right-arm towards the soaring delivery and played a perfect passing shot.

Rodionov was not prepared for the spectacular shot, losing the point while the crowd erupted in a chorus of ‘wow’.

Despite the match taking place before the first Grand Slam of 2019, the shot is already being hailed as the ‘shot of the year’ by avid fans.

‘This shot from Dan Evans is literally a ‘sorcery’, not very likely to see a better shot in the whole season,and season just started,’ one fan wrote on Twitter.

The official Australian Open Twitter account said: ‘Ten days into 2019, Dan Evans has already hit Shot of the Year in #AusOpen qualifying.’ 

Even US tennis star Andy Roddick, a former world number one, was impressed by the shot.

‘This is one of the best shots I’ve ever seen,’ he tweeted.

Evans won 6-4 3-6 7-5 and will take on Italian Paolo Lorenzi on Friday for a spot in the main draw.

Evans, a former British number two, is on track to rebuild his tennis career after a drug scandal left him in hot water.

He was caught with cocaine in his system in April 2017 and was handed a one-year ban from the game.

Evans was ranked number 43 in the world at the time of the offence.
