Baby Thrown From Shopping Cart and Killed After Suspected Drunk Driver Speeds Into Parking Lot

A 1-year-old girl is dead after police allege a drunk driver sped into the parking lot of a Texas store and struck a shopping cart in which the child’s mother had placed her while loading groceries into a car.

The child, identified as Corinna Tovar, was in the baby seat of the cart when a blue Ford Ranger pickup turned into the lot of a Dollar General in San Antonio on Monday afternoon “at a fast rate of speed and took a wide turn as it drove in,” police spokeswoman Romana Lopez confirmed in a statement to PEOPLE.

The collision with the cart caused the child to “fly out” of the cart, police said.

The child’s mother and another woman both were injured when, after striking the shopping cart, the pickup then struck a vehicle parked near the mother’s car.

Authorities arrested and booked 25-year-old David Fuentes on charges of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault.

He was being held on a $50,000 bond on the first charge, and a separate $25,000 bond on the second charge, according to police.

The two adult victims, one of whom suffered “serious bodily injury,” were treated at a hospital where the infant was pronounced dead from her injuries, police said. Neither of the adults were immediately identified.

The store’s surveillance camera captured the incident, and charges against Fuentes could be upgraded depending on the fate of the adult victims, police Sgt. Ralph Salazar told local ABC affiliate KSAT.

It could not be determined if Fuentes had retained an attorney who might speak on his behalf.
