8-year-old girl shot by Coast Guardsman father dies

An 8-year-girl shot by her US Coast Guard serviceman father died on Christmas Day, more than a week after her mother and brother were also gunned down in the murder-suicide sparked by a domestic dispute in Florida.

McKenna Presnar was pronounced dead early Tuesday from injuries she sustained during the Dec. 16 shooting at her home in southwest Miami-Dade County near Homestead, law enforcement sources told the Miami Herald.

Authorities said McKenna’s father, Petty Officer First Class John Stanley Presnar, 44, also shot and killed his wife, Gretchen Presnar, 39, and the couple’s 7-year-old son, John Jr., before taking his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

“This incident is a tragedy that impacts an entire community,” Miami-Dade Police Director Juan Perez told the newspaper Tuesday. “We all mourn when these tragic events occur.”

Perez also acknowledged that domestic violence is “difficult” for authorities to prevent.

“As a community, we need to raise awareness to encourage families in need to seek assistance,” Perez told the newspaper.

Police in Miami-Dade responded to the family’s home after Presnar’s mother-in-law allegedly witnessed the violent episode following an argument between Presnar and her daughter and fled the home to call police. Responding officers found Gretchen Presnar and her son dead, while McKenna survived the shooting. She was airlifted to a hospital in critical condition.

Presnar, who joined the Coast Guard in 2001, was an electronics technician who was stationed at Coast Guard Base Miami Beach.
