A massive 134-car pileup during a blizzard left one man dead and 17 injured in northern Japan on Tuesday, authorities said.
The accident — which took eight hours to clear — also stranded about 200 people on the Tohoku Expressway in Miyagi.
The crash came as the region was in the midst of a blizzard that carried wind gusts of up to 60 miles per hour and is due to dump nearly two feet of snow on northern Japan, the Tokyo-based news agency Kyodo News reported.
The pileup was triggered by a truck slamming into a passenger car shortly before noon local time amid poor visibility in the storm.
The storm also forced transit officials to shut down East Japan Railway, Kyodo said.
The details on the dead man and the extent of injuries were not immediately available.
