Who was Grace in Emmerdale and how did she die?

Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt) and Chas Dingle’s (Lucy Pargeter)’s relationship in Emmerdale has been on the rocks for some time now, with viewers realising all was not well during their lockdown episode in June.

And more conflict ensues as Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller)’s attempts to help them get back on track only make things worse – and lead to a huge argument between the pair.

Chas has other things on her mind, meanwhile, in the wake of the anniversary of Grace’s death, leaving her to reflect on her marriage to Paddy and its future.

Grace comes up a lot in tonight’s episode – but just who was she and how did she die?

Who was Grace in Emmerdale?

Grace Dingle was the daughter of Chas Dingle and Paddy Kirk.

She was born in October 2018 after Chas learned in February of that year that she was pregnant, after forgetting about her contraceptive injection.

However she tragically died soon after she was born, living for just 29 minutes.

How did Grace die?

Chas learned at her 20-week scan that her daughter had a condition called Bilaterial Renal Agenesis – meaning her kidneys and bladder had failed to develop.

She was told that if the diagnosis was confirmed her daughter would not survive after being born – but Chas kept the devastating news to herself, only sharing the news with Paddy later on after he had decorated the nursery, having believed everything to be fine with the baby.

He suggested she terminate the pregnancy, as the baby would at most live for a few hours after birth, but Chas refused to go through with it after feeling her daughter kick, hoping for a miracle.

Sadly it was not to be, and Grace passed away soon after her birth, with Paddy and Chas left to imagine – as she brought her into the world. – what she might have been like at different stages of her life if she had lived.

Emmerdale continues tonight on ITV at 7pm.
