‘Who Is America?’: “It Would Be Impossible” To Do Second Season, Sacha Baron Cohen Says

Showtime brass had been hopeful about a second installment of Sacha Baron Cohen’s Who Is America? “I’m dying to bring it back,” the network’s CEO  David Nevins said in August. But Baron Cohen, who earned a Golden Globe nominations for the six characters he played in the gotcha series, does not think a second season is in the cards, at least not for another decade.

“It would be impossible,” he said about doing more Who Is America? in a wide-raging interview with Deadline’s Mike Fleming, in which he lifted the curtain a bit on how he pulled off the feat of duping famous politicians like Dick Cheney, Roy Moore, Sarah Palin.

We relied on the fact that no one was expecting me. I hadn’t done anything undercover for over a decade and so nobody thought, oh wait a minute, is this a Sacha Baron Cohen character?’ That’s the problem. You’d have to wait another 10 years to get away with it again, otherwise you’d have some very slim pickings. And no publicist worth his or her weight would allow an interview with anyone suspicious now.”

Who Is America?, which had been done in deep secrecy and only announced days before its Showtime debut, created “a lot of controversy and a lot of signups,” Nevins said of the series in August. It was “a risk I am really glad we took.”
