When we first heard about ITV’s The Masked Dancer, we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but five days in and it’s safe to say we’re hooked to the wonderfully addictive format.

However, just like the millions of viewers tuning in, we’ve also been scratching our heads as we desperately try to figure out the mystery identities of the top secret celebrity line-up who are showing off their moves. (Honestly, you should see our Google search history!)

So here we bring together all the best fan theories, as we give star detectives Davina McCall, Oti Mabuse, Mo Gilligan and Jonathan Ross a run for their money in the guessing game that has got us all talking.

SQUIRREL

Twitter viewers have all been mentioning one name and the clues definitely add up – EastEnders actress and Strictly star Maisie Smith.

In the clue packages, the seemingly young Londoner has spoken about being an “impersonator” which could be a nod to her acting career.

They also said they’d “been cutting it with TV royalty from an early age and as you can tell from my fur coat it’s rubbed off”, highlighting their red fur. So surely it’s no coincidence that Maisie first appeared in EastEnders as a child, alongside the likes of flame haired on-screen mum Patsy Palmer.

However, it’s Squirrel’s impressive dancing that’s most caught our attention. As seen when Maisie reached the finals of Strictly alongside pro partner Gorka Marquez last year, she’s more than got the credentials.

Plus, eagle-eyed fans have pointed out some very similar choreography to on the BBC dance show, including the splits and gravity-defying lifts.

FROG

After putting in some memorable performances, Frog has split The Masked Dancer fans right down the middle as a right mixture of names have all been touted, including Emma Willis, Pamela Anderson and Carol Vorderman.

However over the last couple of nights, another star name has begun to emerge – Lisa Snowdon.

The most important clues so far appear to be a pirate ship with the word ‘Looney’ on it – a possible hint to when Lisa famously dates Hollywood A-lister George Clooney.

In the two lies and a truth game, Frog also mentioned that her career peaked in Wales, which could be a link to Mount Snowdon and former Strictly star Lisa’s surname.

But we wouldn’t count out someone like diver Tom Daley (Frog said they had “made a big splash”) or someone from the States because of the American accent and the fact they said they came from “across the pond”.

CARWASH

Joel Dommett’s prediction that the audience would fall head over heels for the brilliantly bonkers character was spot on. But who could be under the elaborate costume?

Guesses have included Gary Barlow and Matt Willis, but it’s another boy band member entirely that seems to match up best so far.

Viewers are convinced Carwash is actually Gary’s Take That bandmate Howard Donald – a name Oti herself jotted down.

First up, he said he was "going to let it shine” in the competition, before adding that “nowhere feels more like home than in front of a huge crowd."

But it was the inclusion of a Ferrari parked up at a car wash that got tongues wagging, as Howard is famously into cars.

KNICKERBOCKER GLORY

The fabulous Knickerbocker Glory is one of the toughest to pin down – partly because we can’t make up our minds whether the celebrity is male or female.

On one hand you’ve got people saying it could be a journalist like Susanna Reid as there were mentions of getting “a big scoop.”

And on the other there’s been talk that it could be someone related to magic, like Debbie McGee.

But perhaps the most realistic so far is that the Ice Cream character could be a drag Queen, or someone who likes dressing up as a woman.

Baga Chipz has emerged as a front runner, while Strictly’s Craig Revel Horwood has also been mentioned thanks to the Mind the Gap clue of: “As a young scoop, I won a _ contest with my jelly _” – Craig previously won a cooking show with a signature dish of jellied prawn cocktails.

LLAMA

Just when we thought we had this one nailed as TV and radio presenter Zoe Ball, a flurry of other clues came in and led us down a totally different path.

Hot favourites to be unmasked now include Line of Duty’s Vicky McClure and Keeley Hawes (although we think the AC-12 clue might just be a red herring and the star in question is actually just a fan).

And even Cheryl has been thrown into the mix, with fans suggesting there were several references to her Girls Aloud days and being a judge on talent competitions.

But at the moment our bet is on someone like Jodie Kidd. Not only did the former model settle down and move to a Sussex village – with the clue stating Llama had had a bit of a wild past – but there have also been countless references to horses in the VTs and Jodie is a keen rider.

BEAGLE

When it comes to Beagle, a popular train of thought is that he could be a footballer – with lots of names doing the rounds from Jamie Redknapp to Alan Shearer.

And while key clues so far include Beagle talking about “how things took off” when they got their “first pair of boots”, there’s also been plenty of hints to “flying high” and planes included in the VTs.

So could the detectives be barking up the wrong tree and focusing on football when it’s actually another sport altogether?

After all, another helpful hint came in the form of a famous family tree – and many have been quick to point out that Olympian Greg Rutherford’s grandad played for Arsenal.

SCARECROW

First guesses of Scarecrow being Joe Sugg appear to be wide off the mark if the last episode is anything to go by.

In fact, we’re almost certain it’s a woman underneath the cute costume and currently have a gazillion names whirling round our head, from Stacey Dooley to Stacey Solomon.

So while we tune in for more hints to help us on our way, we’ll be keeping a beady eye on the Scarecrow’s dungarees, as detective Davina McCall recently revealed an extra clue appears in each episode.

ZIP

Disco lover Zip is one of the standouts of the competition so far and has attracted a lot of attention, with many thinking it could be a member of JLS.

But some big hints that have been dropped lead us to a different familiar face – Mark Wright.

We already know it could be a DJ inside the costume, and Mark ticks the box, as he graces the Heart FM airwaves.

And the latest clues seem to suggest that he’s lived in America (Mark famously relocated to host US entertainment show Extra), as well as in the jungle (he came runner-up in I’m a Celeb back in 2011).

Plus, he’s shown he can put his money where his mouth is on the dance floor having wowed on Strictly Come Dancing, so could we be wright about this one?
