It’s no secret that Meghan Markle is a dog lover. After all, she managed to win over the queen’s corgis upon their first meeting (something Prince Harry has been trying to do for years). Following her engagement to Prince Harry, the Duchess of Sussex and one of her dogs, Guy the beagle moved from Toronto to London. But, happened to Meghan Markle’s dog, Bogart? Find out why she couldn’t bring her beloved first dog with her, plus where he is now, ahead.

What happened to Meghan Markle’s dog, Bogart?
Meghan Markle’s new royal life sadly meant saying goodbye to one of her most loyal companions: her first dog, Bogart. According to reports, the Duchess of Sussex had to make the heartbreaking decision to leave her beloved pooch behind in Toronto when she moved to the United Kingdom. Bogart was allegedly too old to move and Meghan Markle feared it would have a negative impact on his life, so she asked a friend to take him in.
Today, he still lives in Toronto and we are sure the duchess keeps in touch with his new owner (and will likely visit whenever she can).
Meghan Markle’s dog, Bogart
Despite no longer living with Meghan Markle, Bogart likely holds a special place in the duchess’s heart. After all, he is her first dog and the reason she prefers to adopt dogs today. Up ahead, we share more about Bogart’s life, including the insane way he ended up becoming Meghan Markle’s dog in the first place.
Ellen DeGeneres convinced Meghan Markle to adopt him
Meghan Markle’s story about how she adopted Bogart is pretty crazy — and very Hollywood. I was in LA and I went to this dog rescue [shelter] and they had gotten him and his brother,” she told Best Health in 2016. “So I saw him and I was sitting there with him and then Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi walk in. Now, I don’t now her, but Ellen goes ‘Is that your dog?’ And I said, ‘No,’ and she’s like, ‘You have to take that dog.’ And I said, ‘Well, I’m deciding.’ And she’s like, ‘Rescue the dog!’ It’s sort of like if Oprah tells you to do something,” she continued.
“ I’m sitting there holding him and she’s like ‘Have you thought of a name for him yet?’ And I said, ‘Well, I think I’d name him Bogart,’ and she’s like ‘You’re taking the dog home.’ And she walks outside to get into her car but instead of getting in she turns around and comes and taps on the window glass and she yells ‘Take the dog!’ And so I brought him home. Because Ellen told me to,” she explained.
He is a Labrador-shepherd mix
While she doesn’t know for sure, Meghan Markle believes her dog, Bogart is a Labrador-Shepherd mix. Judging by pictures from her now-deleted Instagram account, the duchess is likely correct about her assumptions. The dog has similar features to that of a Labrador and shepherd breed.
He was best friends with Guy the beagle
According to her interview with Best Health, Bogart and Guy were once “thick as thieves.” But, now that they live in different countries and Bogart can’t travel overseas (or else he would have moved with the duchess), they likely don’t get to see each other much anymore.
