Earlier this week, Vera star Kenny Doughty announced he would be departing from the Brenda Blethyn series after eight years as Aiden Healy. The actor replaced Joe Ashworth (played by David Leon) in 2014 and has remained by DCI Stanhope’s side ever since. However, following the announcement, fans have been left wondering whether ITV bosses will replace Kenny while others have shared their concerns over whether the series will come to an end.

ITV bosses have confirmed to Express.co.uk a new feature-length episode will be released later this year.

The episode titled, The Rising Tide, which is based on the eleventh Vera novel written by Ann Cleeves, will feature Kenny alongside Brenda.

A spokesperson went on to explain more details about the series will be released very soon.

On Monday, Kenny took to social media to confirm he was leaving the show.

After sharing a series of photos with Brenda, the actor thanked his fellow co-stars and fans for their ongoing support.

He wrote: “After 8 years & 35 Vera films I’ve made the difficult decision of handing over DS Healy’s badge.

“I can confirm I am leaving Vera. I want to thank everyone who’s made this amazing time so joyous, ITV, Silverprint, all the brilliant cast and crew BUT of course my buddy & inspiration Brenda Blethyn.”

The Aiden Healy star concluded: “The perfect leading star who I owe so much to.

“I feel lucky to have you as a friend, you make me howl with laughter & have been a rock for me over the years. I can’t thank you enough. Precious times.

“And finally the Vera fans: without you and your support I would never have made so many films.

“You really are the best fans in the world. Thank you so much for your loyalty & love for the show. X” (sic)

It is unclear whether Aiden will be replaced in the ITV series, but fans have been coming up with theories of their own.

Some hope Joe Ashworth will make his return to the show after his departure in 2014.

While others suggested Mark Edwards (Riley Jones) steps up to the mark.

Vera is available to watch on ITVX and BritBox.
