Channel 4's Wagatha Christie drama – Vardy v Rooney – has faced a bitter backlash from viewers slating the show's Scouse accent.

The two-part series has brought to life the sensational real-life High Court libel trial between rival WAGs Coleen Rooney and Rebekah Vardy which took place earlier this year.

The whole nation was gripped as the footballers' wives battled it out in the courtroom for seven days in May, with intimate details of their private lives laid out bare in the courtroom.

Former model Rebekah Vardy had sued Coleen Rooney for libel after Coleen accused her in 2019 of leaking stories to the British press via her private Instagram account.

The Channel 4 drama got a frosty reception from many viewers when it aired its first episode on Wednesday (December 21), but it seems the backlash hasn't stopped there.

Angry fans took to Twitter to complain about BAFTA-winning actress Chanel Cresswell's portaryal of Coleen during the second episode on Thursday night.

It's clear punters took issue with Chanel's attempt at a Liverpudlian accent – and they weren't afraid to give their brutally honest opinion.

One viewer wrote: "The scouse accent in this is diabolical."

A second agreed: "That Scouse accent is shocking [laughing emoji]."

A third fumed: "that women’s scouse accent is awful. Why couldn’t they get a proper scouser!!? We DON’T sound like that!!!!!"

A fourth admitted they were thinking of switching off as they penned: "Oh I don’t know if I can watch part 2….this accent is nothing like a Liverpool accent"

However, others showed support for the actress, with one tweeting: "Natalia Tena [who plays Vardy] and Chanel Cresswell are brilliant".

Vardy sued Rooney for libel after being accused of leaking the information, but it was Wayne Rooney's wife Coleen who ended up winning the case.

The court dismissed Vardy's claim on the bases that Rooney's statements were substantially true.
