Tony Awards 2022: When does the ceremony take place?

THE TONY Awards are back to celebrate their 75th anniversary.

This year's show will be available live, nationwide – for the first time, ever.

When and where are the Tony Awards 2022?

The 2022 Tony Awards will air on Sunday, June 12.

The ceremony itself will be held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

As of April 22, 2022, the eligibility period and nominations announcement date for the Tony Awards were pushed back by a couple of days.

Originally scheduled to end on April 28, the eligibility period will now run until May 4.

Similarly, the announcement of the 2022 Tony nominees has been pushed back to May 9, although it was originally scheduled for May 3.

Charlotte St. Martin, president of The Broadway League and Heather Hitchens, president and CEO of the American Theatre Wing stated: “Due to the challenges that Broadway has faced in recent weeks, and in an effort to allow nominators to see Tony eligible shows, we have decided to extend the deadline for eligibility requirements."

The extension will also provide voters with more time to view eligible shows before casting their votes.

Nominees will be announced on May 9, at 6am PT/9am ET, via the Tony Award’s official YouTube page.

Who is hosting?

On Wednesday, May 4, the Tonys revealed that Broadway star and Oscar winner, Ariana DeBose, is slated to host this year's ceremony.

Ariana said in a statement: "I’m coming home! I’m so honored to celebrate 75 years of excellence in theatre.

"More importantly, every member of this community who poured themselves into making sure the lights of Broadway have the opportunity to shine brightly once again."

The West Side Story star concluded: "This is a dream come true, and I’m excited to see you all on June 12th."

How can I watch the Tony Awards?

On June 12, 2022, the 75th Annual Tony Awards will be aired on CBS beginning at 5pm ET/8pm PT.

The ceremony will also be streamed live on Paramount+ for subscribers.

The Tony Award's official account took to Twitter in March to announce the date:

"The countdown begins! The 75th Annual #TonyAwards will return to @RadioCity on Sunday, June 12, in a four-hour television and streaming event only on @CBS and @paramountplus."

What are the Tony Awards?

The Tony Awards got their start in 1947 as a way to celebrate excellence in the theatre.

The awards are presented annually by the American Theatre Wing and The Broadway League and are hosted in New York.

As of 2019, there are currently 26 categories of competitive Tony Awards, according to the Tony Award official website.
