The Third Day is a drama TV series which has been written by Dennis Kelly, and it was first commissioned back in June 2019. A year on and fans are wondering when the new series will air on Sky Atlantic and HBO, as they are keen to see Jude Law in his new role. has everything you need to know about the release date, cast, and plot for the new miniseries.

When is The Third Day out?

The Third Day was due to air on May 11, 2020, but sadly due to the coronavirus pandemic grinding production to a halt, the release date has been postponed.

HBO announced in April this year the series will make its debut in autumn 2020, however no official release date has been given yet.

The series is a co-production between Sky and HBO, and it is the first original drama to be produced by Sky Studios, the network’s new production house, along with Plan B Entertainment. will update this story once an official release date has been announced. The series will be available on HBO On Demand, HBO Now, HBO GO and Sky Atlantic.

The shoot took four months and co-creator Felix Barrett said they were thrilled to be working with Plan B, Sky and HBO to bring the series to both sides of the Atlantic.

Who is in the cast of The Third Day?

Jude Law takes on the main role of Sam, a man who travels alone and finds himself driving onto the mysterious island in the middle of summer.

Law is a well-known British actor who has won plenty of awards across his career, and he is known for his roles in The Holiday, Sherlock Holmes and most recently The Nest.

Naomie Harris plays Helen, an outsider who comes to the island to solve her own problems but ends up causing new ones for residents.

Harris is an English actress who is known for her roles in Moonlight, Runaway Bay and she also has a role in the upcoming James Bond film – No Time to Die.

Other stars in the miniseries include Katherine Waterston as Jess, Paddy Considine as Mr Martin, Emily Watson as Mrs Martin, John Dagleish as Larry and Freya Allan as Kail.


Is there a trailer for The Third Day?

Yes, there is a trailer for the new series which has been released by HBO and it is available to watch on YouTube.

It shows Jude Law driving onto the island and the residents say there is “something special about this place”.

But the causeway onto the island closes when it becomes submerged under water, and the residents say he will have to “stay in paradise forever”.

The eerie trailer then takes a dark turn as it shows a dead body, followed by a huge caravan fire, and the narrator says “terrible things have happened here”.

The inhabitants are described as being secretive and the rituals of the island become overwhelming for Sam.

His time on the island forces him to come to terms with trauma from his past, and reality starts to blur with his nightmares.

What happens in The Third Day?

The six-part series is unique in the fact it is divided into two parts, called Summer and Winter.

Summer makes up the first three episodes and it stars Jude Law as Sam, who comes across a mysterious island off the coast of Britain.

He meets a group of islanders who inhabit the land and their main goal is to preserve their traditions at any cost.

Winter then makes up the final three episodes and it stars Naomie Harris as Helen, a strong-willed character who visits the island to find answers.

The outsider sparks chaos for the islanders and her arrival sets off a battle to decide the fate of the island.

The series follows the individual journeys of these two characters who arrive on the island at different times.

Critics have already said the series is likely to have viewers on the edge of their seats, and it has been described as intriguing and creepy.

Deadline explained the series will tell three stand-alone stories, which are somehow interconnected, and one of them will take place in the UK.

Post-production for the series was supposedly impacted by the production shutdown, just as fans were preparing for the official launch.

The first three episodes were created by Dennis Kelly and Marc Munden, whilst the final three episodes were written by Kit de Wall, Dean O’Loughlin and Dennis Kelly.

Fans have already likened the series to Midsommar – a horror film from 2019 which involved a couple travelling to Sweden, who find themselves getting involved with a pagan cult.

The Third Day will be available on HBO and Sky Atlantic in Autumn 2020.
