Britain’s royal family had quite a year in 2018. They dominated headlines around the globe with a couple of royal weddings, the arrival of some little ones, and a major milestone that was marked in a unique way. There was also plenty of drama thanks to the relatives of the newest member of the royal family. But overall they had much more to celebrate throughout the year and we’ll be watching to see what 2019 holds for them.

In November 2018, Prince Charles turned 70 years old. That marked a milestone birthday for the longest-serving heir apparent, so the celebrations were huge and there wasn’t just one.
“The Duke of Cornwall’s “first birthday” was a garden party at Buckingham Palace on May 22. In October, his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, organized a get-together that featured a program of music, opera, ballet, and a Shakespearean drama. Then on Nov. 14 (his actual birthday), bells at Westminster Abbey rang out, a 62-gun salute went off at the Tower of London, and 6,200 cannons fired during the Brexit cabinet meeting at Downing Street.

Princess Eugenie and Jack Brooksbank had one of the royal weddings in the family this year.
On Oct. 12, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson‘s youngest daughter tied the knot with a ceremony at St. George’s Palace in Windsor Castle. It was, of course, a lavish affair with 800 people in attendance, which was even more guests than her cousin, Prince Harry, had at his royal wedding.

There were actually two royal births in 2018. Princess Anne’s daughter, Zara Tindall, welcomed her second daughter with husband Mike Tindall in June. A few months earlier though the world learned that Prince William’s wife, Kate Middleton, gave birth to their third child.
The baby boy, who is fifth in the line of succession to the British throne, was born on April 23. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge named him Prince Louis.

Eugenie’s wedding may have had more people in attendance but there’s no question that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s was the biggest royal wedding of the year.
The prince and former Suits star announced their engagement in November 2017 and said “I do” several months later. There was no shortage of hype leading up to the big day and on May 19, millions of viewers around the world tuned in to see the splendid ceremony between the American actress and Princess Diana’s youngest son.

Finally, perhaps the biggest news out of the palace in 2018 was the announcement that Prince Harry and Markle are expecting their first child together. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex revealed the big news to their family when they were all gathered for Princess Eugenie’s wedding.
Kensington Palace posted the news on its Instagram page on Monday, Oct. 15, 2018, and in a brief statement said that the couple is “delighted to be able to share this happy news with the public.”
Markle and Harry’s baby is due in the spring of 2019.
