Strictly fans ask if Shirley Ballas has been ‘at the Christmas sherry’

Shirley Ballas dazzled as the Fairy Godmother on tonight’s Strictly Come Dancing Christmas Special.

She was loving her costume, the dances before her and the festive spirit sparkling through all the amazing performances.

But while some may have thought her festive cheer was purely that, others wondered whether she had been at the Christmas sherry a bit early this year, as she was acting out in a rather surprising way.

Shirley was giggling, smiling and constantly showing her excitement, even more so than we have ever seen her before.

One fan joked on social media: "Shirley’s been on the sherry since 10am # strictly"

Another suggested: "Is Shirley p***ed? # strictly # christmasstrictly"

A third added: "Shirley is totally drinking under that table. # strictly"

Another joked: "Shirley comes in on bevy blootered. # Strictly # Christmas"

A fifth laughed: "Shirley is f***ing wired! # strictly"

Shirley seemed very excited by the returning celebrity dancers, many of whom she had never seen before on the dancefloor.

Anita Rani performed a "stylish" Foxtrot with Neil Jones, before cricketer Matthew Vaughan took to the floor with Nadiya Bychcova.

Also in the competition were Aston Merrygold with his old dance partner, Janette Manrara, and Caroline Flack with Gorka Marquez.

And who could forget, Ann Widdecombe, who amazed the viewers at home as he got Anton Du Beke dressed up as her ugly stepsister for a hilarious Cinderella-themed performance.

Of course, EastEnders’ Jake Wood completely sizzled with his "snake hips" once again, which really set Shirley in a tizz as she tried to fan herself between performances.

The winner, Aston, said: "Now I can actually join this winners’ club.

“I really, really wanted that 10 from Craig. That was my big thing. I didn’t manage to get a 40 when I was on the show.

“If you can be among that elite group who get a clean sweep, it’s job done. I can sleep happy tonight.”

Remembering when he and partner Janette Manrara were voted off, the pop star believed viewers thought he was too experienced.

He said: “I’ve never trained, I just love to dance. I had bad habits. Janette had to uncarve me and carve me back into being a dancer.”

MirrorOnline had contacted BBC for comment.
