Hayden Christensen had plenty of iconic lines as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy. However, it’s unclear if fans love his dialogue or are making fun of it. George Lucas has been criticized for some of the dialogue that he wrote for the Star Wars prequels. Christensen stands with Lucas and defends the dialogue that he wrote.
Hayden Christensen played Anakin Skywalker in the ‘Star Wars’ prequels
Christensen joined Star Wars as Anakin in Episode II: Attack of the Clones and played the role once more in Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. The story of Anakin is a central part of the prequels as audiences watch his transition from Jedi padawan to Darth Vader. The role was previously played by Jake Lloyd in Episode I: The Phantom Menace.
The actor has faced criticism in the past for his acting in the prequels, but some blame Lucas’ dialogue. Many fans believe that it would be hard for any actor to make the prequels dialogue work as it can often be awkward or cheesy. Still, many fans now have come around to Christensen’s performance and even enjoy his corny way of speaking.
Hayden Christensen defends the prequels dialogue from George Lucas
Many of Anakin’s classic lines from the prequels include “This is where the fun begins” and a long rant about how he doesn’t like sand. In a new interview with The Guardian, Christensen praised the dialogue written by Lucas. During the interview, a situation is brought up where Harrison Ford yelled at Lucas “You can type this s**t, but you sure can’t say it!” while on the set of one of the films. Christensen said that isn’t fair.
“George Lucas creates such a unique world where everything is so specific, from the way these characters look and the way that they talk, and I feel like sometimes people lose sight of that and they expect them to speak the same way that we speak – and that’s not what we were going for,” Christensen said.
It is true that Star Wars is in a separate universe from our own, so it would make sense that they would speak differently. However, Lucas has always had a unique way of writing that may not just be unique to Star Wars.
Christensen is returning as Anakin in ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’
Christensen is reprising the role of Anakin and Darth Vader in the upcoming Obi-Wan Kenobi series for Disney+. Fans have embraced Christensen’s return and the actor has said that he joins the new appreciation for the prequels. He used to not feel comfortable going to fan conventions, but the positive fan reactions convinced him to attend.
“I love getting to connect with these fans who express how much these films mean to them, and specifically this character,” Christensen told The Guardian. “And getting to see young kids dressed up as Anakin and make a connection with them. For me, it has a lot of value, and I hope it’s mutual.”
The first two episodes of Obi-Wan Kenobi premiere on May 27 on Disney+.
