Back in April, the first teaser trailer for Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker saw some big surprises. Not only did the closing shot see Rey come upon the Death Star II ruins from Return of the Jedi, but Palpatine’s laugh could be heard. Dark Sidious is back, having somehow survived Darth Vader throwing him off a ledge. And now an alleged leak – which should be taken with a large grain of salt – claims that Palpatine is living on inside the charred helmet of Kylo Ren’s grandfather.
Star Wars YouTuber Mike Zeroh, who claims to have sources, spoke of an alleged scene where: “Kylo Ren is sitting inside of his chambers where he keeps all of his relics and artefacts.
“One of the scenes has Kylo Ren meditating on the floor with the Dark Vader helmet in both of his hands.
“Whispers begin to be heard in the distance within Kylo Ren’s mind that consist of scrambled words, sayings of the ancient Sith code.
“He begins to hear laugher…in the distance that disturbs Kylo Ren and [he] feels a power stronger than the Dark Side itself.”
He added: “[It’s] overwhelming for Kylo Ren. Vader’s charred helmet is possessed by the spirit of Sidious and is used as a…bridge to communicate [with] and manipulate Kylo Ren to the Dark Side further, in order to eventually take over his body without decay.”
Whether or not this leak can be trusted, it’s quite the theory.
But is Palpatine now a Sith Force ghost like Luke is a Jedi one?
Certainly, it’s not out of the question that Sidious has survived in a Sith artefact like Darth Vader’s helmet due to new additions in Star Wars canon.
Last year the official Darth Vader comic saw the yet-to-be-redeemed Anakin Skywalker given the helmet of a Sith called Lord Momin.
Interestingly, this is lent by Palpatine, before the helmet speaks to Vader.
Was the Emperor aware that Sith could live on through artefacts?
Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker will be released in UK cinemas on December 19, 2019.
