Todd Grimshaw (Gareth Pierce) makes a resounding return to the eponymous Coronation Street, but his arrival on the cobbles brings with it danger for not only himself but also mum Eileen (Sue Cleaver).
With Craig Tinker (Colson Smith) having previously informed Eileen that a body matching her son’s description had been found, Todd implores that she wrongly identify that body as him!
Eileen struggles to come to terms with his suggestion, while Sean Tully (Antony Cotton) offers to accompany her to the mortuary.
In spite of her son’s request, Eileen tells Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) that the body wasn’t Todd’s, and relief washes over him.
Todd, however, isn’t as pleased, which results in some heated conflicted between mother and son.
Eileen opens up to Mary Taylor (Patti Clare), confirming that Todd is alive and that she’s been seeing him in secret, and Mary later speaks to George Shuttleworth (Tony Maudsley) about the predicament in which her pal and Todd find themselves in.
George freezes upon hearing the name of gangster Mick Costello, and warns that he’s incredibly dangerous. Determined to help, the undertaker comes up with an idea — and it’s a pretty genius one at that!
Meanwhile, Eileen apologises to Todd once more, and while he forgives her for what she’s done, he reveals that he’s got no choice to but to disappear forever.
As the week progresses, Eileen scrapes together £1300 in an effort to pay off Mick so that Todd can get on with his life and live as a free man.
However, Mary and George have other ideas, as they unveil a hearse with a coffin inside — and flowers depicting Todd’s name!
Yes, they plan on staging a fake funeral so that Mick will think that Todd is dead.
Pretty clever, right?
Eileen has little opportunity to ponder the plan, as Mick arrives on the cobbles not long afterwards.
Meanwhile, Todd enters No. 11 and starts searching for Eileen’s cash, but Mick enters the premises, forcing the young man to hide.
The gangster reveals to Eileen that he and Todd were lovers — that is, until Todd stole from him.
However, Mick soon realises that Todd is upstairs, and therefore decides to hold both the Grimshaws hostage.
What will transpire?
Will Todd make it out alive?
