Queen Elizabeth II filmed Paddington sketch in one take ‘tip top’ performance

The late Queen Elizabeth II challenged the director when she filmed her sketch with Paddington.

When the monarch was asked to shoot a scene again, she insisted her performance had already been tip top.

Actor Simon Farnaby, who played a footman in the film, said: "I was amazed. Our director worked really hard to get her performance. They'd go, 'Can you just do it again?'.

"And she’d go,‘I thought I was pretty good'. Credit to him for getting that performance out of her!"

The Queen filmed the sketch just months before her death as part of the Jubilee celebrations in 2022 to mark 70 years on the throne.

Part of the celebrations included the Party at the Palace concert featuring performances from Craig David, Queen, Diana Ross, Ella Eyre and George Ezra.

One part of the show also featured the comic sketch between Paddington Bear as he sat down for tea with the monarch and they shared their mutual love of marmalade sandwiches.

Despite battling health issues, the late Queen was up for working for as long as it took to get it right.

Simon said: "We were there all day. It was a long day for an old lady. But she loved it.

"She really wanted to do it. She said, 'Have as much time as you need'.

"We had a few chats. She was great. She kept going, 'You must be very tired walking up and down'. She was very nice, like your grandma really."

Simon added: "It was really odd being in Windsor Castle and wandering around seeing all the paintings."

The sketch, which was filmed at Windsor Castle, won a BAFTA on Sunday with actor Ben Whishaw accepting the award alongside the production team.

The sketch, which aired three months before the Queen’s death aged 96, was dubbed the 'best thing' by viewers as it won the P&O Cruises Memorable Moment Award at the Bafta TV Awards.

The BBC programme also featured a snippet of Paddington Bear sitting in the audience at the awards show as the award was announced.
