The First Wives Club is full of iconic scenes — but few are funnier than the one where Marcia Gay Harden gets a beating from a manic Diane Keaton.
The smackdown occurs early in the 1996 classic comedy, when Annie (Keaton) visits her younger therapist (Harden) and is encouraged to access her anger by hitting her with a foam bat. Annie’s at first reluctant but then out of nowhere smacks Harden’s character in the face — repeatedly.
“I’m sorry you take a beating from Diane Keaton — but it’s so good!,” Couch Surfing host Lola Ogunnaike tells Harden, 59, in the latest episode of the PEOPLE TV show.

“But the thing is, I really did. She was supposed to just fake hit me in the head,” shared Harden. “I’m sorry — she really hit me! She really hit me, oh my god [laughs]. But it was funny. Anything for a laugh.”
The First Wives Club famously starred Keaton, Bette Midler and Goldie Hawn as three women who lose their husbands to younger women and proceed not only to get even — but get everything.
“For me, they were legends,” Harden recalls of working with the three women. “I just remember Goldie being so funny — and kind of being in awe of the legends they were.”
