Nineties pop legends unrecognisable 26 years after huge hit as they promote Barbie movie | The Sun

NINETIES pop ground Aqua look very different after shooting to fame 26 years ago with their huge track Barbie Girl.

The Danish-Norwegian group, made of singers Lene Nystrøm, René Dif, the spikey-haired keyboardist Søren Rasted and guitarist Claus Norreen, topped the charts back in 1997.

The group reunited this week to promote Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling's Barbie movie produced by Greta Gerwig.

The group feature on the new Hollywood film soundtrack, and Aqua's lead singer Lene Nystrøm took to TikTok to tease fans about the highly-anticipated film.

Lene, 49, looked very different as she rocked an orange vest top and her luscious dark curly hair down, as Lene pretended to type on her phone.

She wrote: "Aqua reminding everyone that Barbie World is out everywhere."

Aqua's lead male vocalist René Dif also took to social media to make a similar TikTok clip.

He sported a zip-up top in a photo and captioned it: "Aqua reminding everyone that Barbie Girl (Tiësto Remix) is out everywhere."

The pop group collaborated with Nicki Minaj and Ice Spice for the Barbie soundtrack, while also re-releasing the hit as a remix last month with Tiësto.

Barbie girl was such a smash that even the makers of the Barbie doll, Mattel, tried to sue the group because they didn't like the sexual nature of the song being linked to the toy.

The lawsuit was eventually dismissed by a judge in 2002, who ruled "the parties are advised to chill".

It was their third single that put them on the map in 1997 followed by Doctor Jones shortly after.

During the peek of their career, they released their album Aquarium followed by their second album Aquarius in 2000 – but it turned out to be a flop.

Soon after, the band went their separate ways, stating to Billboard: "We have looked each other straight in the eye and reached the conclusion that, for the moment, the spark is missing."

But there were rumours going around that the group's split was actually because of a love triangle between Lene, René and Søren.

Apparently Lene hooked up with band mate René briefly before cheating on him with Søren.

Despite this, the band members remained close and in 2007 Aqua went on a reunion tour.
