Netflix fans LIVID as streamer axes Oscar-winning film with no explanation – fuming 'this s**t needs to stop!' | The Sun

NETFLIX UK fans were left fuming as the streaming service axed another award-winning film, starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst.

Netflix UK have announced that the Oscar-winning film The Power of the Dog will be axed next month.

Set in 1925 Montana, wealthy ranch-owning brothers Phil (Benedict Cumberbatch) and George Burbank (Jesse Plemons) meet widow and inn owner Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst) during a cattle drive.

The kind-hearted George is quickly taken with Rose, but the coarse and volatile Phil dislikes her, believing she only wants George's money.

Directed by Jane Campion, the film garnered 27.2 million viewing hours on the streamer to finish as the No. 1 English-language film on Netflix worldwide for the week.

It was highly regarded as one of the best films of 2021 by multiple top-ten lists and has received many accolades, including a leading 12 nominations at the 94th Academy Awards.

The last day fans can watch the western hit on Netflix is on 18th August 2023.

This comes after other Netflix originals like His House was similarly axed from the streamer in October of 2022.

There could be a chance that the film will end up being available to stream on BBC iPlayer, but this is yet to be confirmed.

However, it is believed that The Power of the Dog will still be available to stream internationally, which includes the US and Europe.

UK fans took to Twitter to shared their frustrations over yet another popular film being axed by the streaming service.

One said: "Why would they just delete it? It was nominated for best picture!"

Another wrote: "Was this not a Netflix original? Did they not get like 12 Oscar nominations?"

A third penned: "S**t like this really needs to stop."

A fourth added: "This movie won the British Film Academy award for Best Picture and they’re removing it from Netflix UK?"

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch will next be seen in Wes Anderson's Netflix movie The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar.

It will premiere at the Venice Film Festival in September, before being released on Netflix at an unconfirmed date.

The Power of the Dog can be watched on Netflix UK until 18th August 2023 and is available on Blu-ray.
