BBC Breakfast’sNaga Munchetty couldn’t quite contain her cringe on Thursday, as she and her co-host Charlie Stayt were faced with a portrait of the Prime Minister – made entirely of hair.

But Naga couldn’t help admitting something about the artwork "bothers" her.

The Boris Johnson artwork was created by Davinia Fox, a hairdresser from Somerset, who wanted to thank the PM for ‘getting the country through the pandemic’.

And it was made entirely from offcuts of hair from her salon, which she "carefully swept up" without her clients finding out.

Naga and Charlie couldn’t quite believe their eyes as Charlie wondered: "Who is that?"

Fighting back giggles, Naga responded: "Can’t you tell? That’s a portrait of the Prime Minister," adding: "The size of it is substantial, it’s five feet by three feet.

"Davinia says she’d love to see Mr Johnson come to admire the work."

Squinting at the art, Charlie mused: "That is a lot of hair used in that artwork, isn’t it? A lot of hair. I’m not sure quite what to make of that."

"Do you not like it?" Naga pressed, as Charlie insisted: "No, I’m always in favour of art pushing the boundaries or whatever, so good. I’m glad it’s happened, but don’t know. Can we see it again?"

Naga echoed his question as Charlie explained: "I was just trying to work it out, really, as I was looking at it."

Which is when his co-host had to admit that there was something about the piece she couldn’t quite put her finger on, as she admitted: "Do you know what kind of bothers me a little bit? Just how proud it is. How proud it is off the actual board that it’s on. It’s quite high.

"As you look at it face-on, it could be quite 2D, but then the pictures change and… look how much is on there! I wonder if that’s all hair or if it’s put on something else?"

The presenters soon turned to weather presenter Carol Kirkwood for her opinion – and she, too, was torn.

"What does your expert eye tell us about that?" Naga wondered.

Carol responded: "I’m with Charlie. I did recognise it as the Prime Minister, but I don’t know. I’m a traditionalist, I think!"

Naga couldn’t help but quip that hair-portraits are a hobby Charlie should take up with his own impressive barnet, as she urged: "I think you could contribute to this, if it becomes a massive trend.

"I was thinking in terms of sourcing materials, Charlie, you might be able to help."
