Gardeners’ World: Monty Don announces end of series

The latest series of Gardeners’ World drew to a close on Friday night, leaving viewers saddened. The popular BBC Two show has been presented by horticulturist Monty Don since 2003, who ended the series finale with a profound message to the programme’s loyal fanbase.
Viewers have been tuning in to Gardeners’ World to listen to the 66-year-old share his best gardening tips and secrets.
At the end of Friday’s episode, Monty announced that the series will return in the spring before he shared a touching message with viewers.
He said: “Well that’s it for today, and that’s it for our weekly programmes this year too, although we do have three brand new programmes which will be going out towards the end of this year celebrating the season.
“And as we come to an end of another quite difficult and strange year, I don’t think gardens have ever been more important and given so much pleasure and comfort to so many people than they do now.”
He bid farewell to viewers with his beloved dogs Nell and Patti which are often seen on the gardening programme.
When Monty announced Friday’s instalment of the BBC show would be the last of the series, fans took to Twitter to express their disappointment.
Laura commented: “@BBC Just as the nights really draw in and we need comfort TV #GardenersWorld comes to an end. Couldn’t you do us a clip show of old bits from years ago to get us through winter? You must have a vast archive.”
Katrina Navickas added: “I am sad now that #GardenersWorld has finished. That marks the start of another long wet winter wait until Spring and Monty returns.”
Many green-fingered fans also commented on Monty’s touching message about the importance of gardening during a difficult year.
Teasel Bee said: “How very true – another very strange year – and yes, without our gardens, I think many of us would have lost the plot long ago!”
Fritha added: “@TheMontyDon is so right. A garden is never finished, it’s an ongoing journey that we’ve joined in with along the way. But oh what a stunning journey it can be even this late in the gardening year.”
Helen Ireland commented: “Quite right, @TheMontyDon about the importance of gardening. Thank you and @GWandShows for helping to keep us sane. Have a good winter and we’ll look forward to the spring.”
Zehra Zaidi added: “The pandemic showed us how important gardening can be for our mental health. #gardenersworld is right. But we can make gardening more inclusive and community gardening for everyone, whether you have a garden or not; or just want company?”
Monty hosted the episode alongside presenters Toby Buckland, Adam Frost and Sue Kent.
During the instalment, Monty prepared for the spring while Adam visited Broughton Grange, in Oxfordshire.
Toby took a visit to Sue’s garden in Swansea to help out with some general maintenance ahead of the cold snap.
The Welsh gardener learned a thing or two about how to make the most out of her lavender bushes.
As for when the show will return, Monty confirmed there will be three special episodes before the end of the year.
They will highlight the best parts of the weekly series so far – meaning fans will have plenty more to look forward to.
Monty regularly keeps fans up to date on social media, so hopefully, more information about the show’s return will come to light soon.
