Masked Singer’s Lenny Henry’s identity almost leaked after costume mishap

Lenny Henry admitted his identity on The Masked Singer was almost leaked by workmen after a funny wardrobe blunder.

The comedian spoke to Lorraine Kelly on her ITV show on Monday morning following his elimination, admitting the secret was almost revealed months ago.

The 62-year-old explained: "Nobody in my family knew. My partner knew. I think the builders might have suspected something because you get a visor and a jumper that says 'do not speak to me'."

He went on to explain that they saw him in his secret outfit, adding: "Then I started to get dressed in the car."

That wasn't the only near-miss though, as Lenny went on: "I was backstage and took my visor off and was getting my costume on and I looked up and there were electricians working, and they said, 'That's Ainsley Harriott!'

"But everyone signs a contract and you're not allowed to say, but they knew who I was."

Speaking of his costume, Lenny didn't seem too impressed to have been given the Blob.

He said: "It was alright… [laughs] It was okay."

The actor went on: "When I saw the costume I knew the designer was a huge fan of the costume because there were drawings and all kinds of things.

"I said, 'It's a bit purple isn't it?' And they seemed to think that was good.

"Once I got into it and got used to it, it was like being a Muppeteer.

"I'd always wanted to be a Muppeteer and I thought, 'Let's see if I can translate it through this big thing,' – and people seemed to love it."

During his time on The Masked Singer, famous faces that the judges thought Blob could be included Ainsley Harriott, Joe Wicks, Stephen Fry and even Morgan Freeman, which Lenny said were "very funny".

He laughed: "I love Ainsley, but really? Not Ainsley!

"Some of the guesses were very funny.

Stephen Fry… I hope Stephen was watching!"

Lenny went on: "Never ever thought I would be known as a Blob."

He said children began guessing his identity after hearing his voice in supermarkets.

"No matter how much you try and disguise your voice, people always clock it," he noted.
