THE team behind smash hit dramas Line of Duty and Cobra are coming back with a new thriller called The Diplomat.
The six-part series, will be based at the British Consul in Barcelona trying to uncover what happened to a dead barman.
The thriller will follow Laura Simmonds and her colleague Alba Ortiz who British nationals who get themselves into hot water in the popular city.
But their skills will be put to the test over the mysterious death of the British barman.
They have to fight against Spanish police and Foreign Office who are refusing to investigate his death as a murder.
But as Laura and Alba find out more about the barman’s death, they find shocking links to organised crime and British security services.
Laura puts herself in real danger to find the truth as British and Spanish forces will do anything to keep it hidden.
The Diplomat will air on UKTV’s Alibi channel, making it the third original series to on the network after Traces and We Hunt together.
The thriller will be written by Ben Richards who created Cobra and produced by the same team who brought viewers the record breaking Line of Duty and Bodyguard.
Ben told Deadline: “I’m delighted to be working with UKTV on The Diplomat – a show that I think will suit their obvious ambition for innovative and exciting new drama..
“In The Diplomat I wanted to show a character who both loves her job and – supported by a team of funny and engaging characters – performs it beyond the call of duty.
"From helping Britons in distress to challenging the shady operations of international mafias, Laura Simmonds (British Consul in Barcelona) has to deal with it all.”
Producers are yet to cast the series or find a director but it will go into production “when safely able to do so”.
The Diplomat is set to air on Alibi in 2021.
