Katherine Ryan left shocked after finding out about triple death in family

Katherine Ryan was left shocked and speechless after discovering three of her ancestors had tragically died in quick succession.

The comedian, who now lives in England but hails from Canada, appeared on BBC’s Who Do You Think You Are, which aired on September 18.

In a bid to find out more about where she came from, Katherine travelled back to Canada in search of answers, as she visited snowy Nova Scotia then headed to the eastern-most point of the region – Newfoundland.

She found out that her 5x great grandparents were cod traders in the local area, before a local historian told her a sad tale.

One of her ancestors died at sea whilst transporting cargo back to his parents. Both he and the cargo were never discovered, and the tragic accident eventually led to the family business collapsing.

The father of the man who died at sea was then said to have died weeks later after his son, of a 'broken heart'.

But even more tragedy was set to strike the family as the son of the father, and the brother of the man who died at sea, also passed away.

Katherine was left emotional at the discovery, as she said to the historian: "He had such a tragic end losing his son then losing his livelihood and then losing his own life,” as she paid a visit to his grave.

But Katherine was left smiling later on as discovered that her ancestors had moved to Canada from Dorset, England, to pursue their career as fishermen.

She herself has moved from Canada to England, where she now resides with her partner Bobby Kootstra, their two young children, Fred and Fenna, and Katherine's 14 year old Violet from a previous relationship.

“I knew I was English,” said happily, as she explained that she always felt that the UK was her “real home.”

She also spoke about how her oldest daughter Violet often laughs at her for not being fully English.

Katherine explained: “My daughter violet gives me a hard time about no being English. Well now I can tell her I’m English!

“She’ll say, ‘I’m so sorry about my mummy, she’s Canadian.”

Katherine recently spoke out in anger as she claimed Violet was 'sexually harassed' during a day out in London with her 16 year old cousin.

Speaking on her Telling Everybody Everything podcast, The Duchess actress said the two teenagers had spent all week having men "putting their arms around them" and "chatting them up", despite their young age.

"Anyone looking at these girls, no-one is mistaking them for being adult women," she said. "Maybe someone might hope that Lily's 18. Nevertheless you're a sick freak and you shouldn't be chatting to teenage girls the way you are."

Katherine has now revealed she was contacted directly by Lucy D’Orsi, Chief Constable of the British Transport Police, who heard her podcast episode. “They take this very seriously. They were hot on it," she said.
