The first episode of Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop saw Jay Blades team up with woodworkers Ciaran and Les for a very special project. BBC viewers saw Ciaran design and build a 13-foot-wide curved arbour, for the staff and residents of a care home in Doncaster. However, upon hearing the dedication of the care workers throughout the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Les got emotional.

The new BBC show sees Jay team up with local craftsmen in a bid to create unique items for people who are doing outstanding work in their community.

The first episode saw guest Sue visit the workshop to meet Jay and nominate the care home staff where her mother-in-law lives in Doncaster.

She explained how some of the care workers selflessly left their own loved ones behind and moved into the home when Covid-19 first hit to keep the residents safe.

Their dedication paid off as no residents caught Covid-19 and as a result, Sue wanted their efforts to be recognised.

In order to thank the staff for their sacrifices, expert woodworker Ciaran designed an arbour for them and residents to enjoy in the care home garden.

Before beginning the build, Ciaran explained the importance of the project to his college Les.

He revealed: “I’m really excited about this, because it’s actually for a care home.

“Some of the carers, throughout the covid pandemic, locked themselves in with all the people in there.

“They didn’t have any space, there were no extra beds in there or anything. So, they all slept on camping beds,” Ciaran explained.

Keen to know more, Les asked: “Just to form one big bubble?”

Ciaran replied: “Yes, absolutely. So, they’ve gone above and beyond.”

“They’ve isolated themselves because of the risk,” Les remarked, clearly amazed by the dedication of the carers.

“It is unreal,” Ciaran commented, as Les broke down and confessed: “It just gets me.”

“It does, I know. I love that emotion because I think you’re going to bring that into this,” Ciaran said.

Les responded: “I’m not going to say it’s going to be no problem, but we’ve just got to get stuck in.”

“That’s the confidence I like to hear,” Ciaran said, encouraging his fellow craftsman.

Later in the episode, the workshop team presented the finished arbour to the staff of the care home.

After the carer detailed the changes they’d made to keep residents safe amid the pandemic, Les was overcome with emotion.

“I want to say thank you,” he said, breaking down in tears. “It’s beyond and above.”

Jay’s Yorkshire Workshop airs Wednesdays at 9pm on BBC Two.
