A creator of one movie might not be pleased when another film knocks it from its perch as the highest-grossing movie ever. James Cameron is.
Until Avengers: Endgame was presented to millions of movie fans around the globe, Avatar was holding strong as the highest-grossing film of all time. It was a record that stood over a decade, some doubting it would ever be dethroned.
Director James Cameron was the man behind that iconic film and has been known to create a massive scale hit or two. But, when the ahead-of-its-time Avatar was removed as the most profitable movie of all time, Cameron didn’t mind. In fact, he was happy about it.
Cameron says he’s excited about what it means that Avengers: Endgame took the No. 1 spot in movie history. And, he makes a valid point, especially when you consider he’s working on two sequels for Avatar that he’s not been confident can live up to the first film in terms of drawing power.
It gives me a lot of hope. Avengers: Endgame is demonstrable proof that people will still go to movie theaters. The thing that scared me most about making Avatar 2 and Avatar 3 was that the market might have shifted so much that it simply was no longer possible to get people that excited about going and sitting in a dark room with a bunch of strangers to watch something.
Can Cameron Break the Avengers Record
With the roles reversed, one has to wonder if Cameron believes either Avatar 2 or Avatar 3 can surpass Avengers: Endgame as the top-grossing movie in history. Considering how long it’s been since the first film came out and his levels of uncertainty that there was still an appetite for the movies he was making, it’s hard to imagine these follow-ups will be as popular as the original.
