Inside Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green's on-off marriage – from age gap fears to 'sex droughts' & fiery spats over kids

SHE made her name as the sizzling star of Transformers, but even Megan Fox may struggle to keep up with the ever-shifting shape of her on-off marriage.

While she and estranged husband Brian Austin Green have spent the last decade showing off their love in endless public displays of affection, it's come amid "destructive" spats, sex droughts and brief splits from each other.

The pair finally called it quits in May after almost 10 years of marriage – and while it appeared amicable at first, it has since taken a bitter turn.

The actress, 34, slammed her ex on Instagram this week after he chose to include their son Journey, 4, in a Halloween photo on his page.

After seeing the picture, Megan accused him of being "intoxicated with feeding the pervasive narrative that I'm an absent mother, and you are the perennial, eternally dedicated dad of the year".

He has since removed the photo and reposted it without his son in the frame.

It's a surprise outburst from the star, who until now has remained fairly tight-lipped about their split. Here we look at their turbulent relationship from the start…

His initial rejection over 13-year age gap

Brian was fresh from his split from former partner and Beverly Hills 90210 co-star Vanessa Marcil when he appeared on US sitcom Hope & Faith in 2004 – and sparks flew with co-star Megan.

However, Brian initially rejected the stunner, who was 18 at the time, due to their 13-year-age gap.

He explained on Barstool Sports’ ‘KFC Radio’ podcast: "I met Megan on [Hope & Faith], and she was really young. And I was like, 'This isn’t this. This can’t f***ing happen. This isn’t going to happen, no way'. And so I left and she was just really persistent, and thank God."

Not one to give in, Megan told the New York Times magazine: "I liked him right away… Brian accidentally touched my leg. I remember literal electricity shooting through me and out me from every direction. It was like magic."

Brian eventually changed his mind when Megan suggested dating other people, and he added to the podcast: "That’s when I realised I was, like, 'F***, I must be really into this situation, the thought of that kills me'."

The couple immediately fell head over heels from there.

A whirlwind (but brief) engagement

The pair didn't waste any time, and announced their engagement in 2006.

While they remained fairly tight-lipped about their relationship at the time, they appeared to be head over heels.

However, it all came crashing down when they called things off in 2009, amid claims Megan was growing close to her Transformers co-star Shia LaBeouf – although at the time they were just friends.

A source told People the decision was "mutual" and they'd remain friends.

According to ET, Megan told Us Weekly that marriage wasn't "a realistic goal for someone who is 23".

Brief romance with Shia LaBeouf

Megan grew close to her co-star Shia LaBeouf during her split from Brian, but while they never confirmed they were any more than friends at the time, Shia has since revealed it turned romantic briefly.

“Look, you’re on the set for six months with someone who’s rooting to be attracted to you and you’re rooting to be attracted to them," he told Details magazine in 2011.

"I never understood the separation of work and life in that situation. But the time I spent with Megan was our own thing, and I think you can see the chemistry on-screen."

Megan also later confirmed the brief romance to Andy Cohen on Watch What Happens Live, saying: "I mean I would confirm that it was romantic. I love him. I’ve never been really quiet about that. I love him."

Reconciliation, fairytale wedding and honeymoon

It wasn't to be for Megan and Shia, however, as she soon reconciled with Brian – with her rep confirming they were an item again in June 2010.

Later that month, the pair wed in a secret ceremony on Hawaii's Big Island.

There were practically no details released about the wedding, but E! claimed Brian's son from his previous relationship, Kassius, gave him away.

They were pictured packing on the PDA in Hawaii a few days later, as they enjoyed a romantic honeymoon – and were even pictured sharing a kiss as they swam with dolphins at Hilton Waikoloa Village.

And it proved to be the start of many loved up trips that year, as the couple went on to pose for photos together in Disney World in Lake Buena Vista, Florida.

They went on to welcome sons Noah in 2012 and Bodhi in 2014.

Meg files for divorce after sex life comments

Megan has always been refreshingly open on camera and in 2014, at the Los Angeles premiere of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, she told ET that she'd struggle to enjoy alone time with Brian due to their busy lives.

"Brian doesn't get any intimacy whatsoever," Megan joked.

Despite the pair appearing blissfully happy, Megan shocked the world when she filed for divorce from her husband in 2015 – citing irreconcilable differences.

“They had several conflicts that led to the divorce,” a source claimed to People.

“Megan worked a lot last year, and she continues to work a lot. When she is away, Brian stays with the kids. Before they filed for divorce, they had disagreements about this situation.”

However, the source insisted "a lot of love" remained between them.

They find love once again & welcome third baby

Love eventually won out once again as the pair reconciled the following year, with the news going public shortly after Megan revealed she was pregnant with their third baby – by debuting her baby bump at CinemaCon.

She made light of the sudden news at the time, sharing a photo of her with her former co-stars Shia LaBeouf, Will Arnett and Jake Johnson, and writing alongside it: “#Notthefather."

Sure enough, the baby was indeed Brian's, and a source confirmed they were back on later that year.

They welcomed their third son, Journey River, in August 2016.

United front during row with Brian’s ex

The couple looked to be well and truly back on track, as they jetted back to Hawaii in 2018 for a romantic break.

However, later that year they hit the headlines when Brian's ex Vanessa Marcil sensationally claimed they hadn't seen his son Kassius in five years.

She claimed on Instagram that they had tried to get full custody, but when they lost the court case, they "cut" Brian's son out of their lives. She also claimed he hadn't met his youngest brother at the time.

JJ, thank you for giving my son and I not only a really great experience, but delivering a finale to something that has been a huge part of our lives in what I felt was a really respectful way :))

Brian, however, shared a photo on an outing with Kassius in 2019, as they went to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker together.

Kassius also visited his father that year on the set of the 90210 reboot.

'Destroying the house' in fiery spats

While Megan and Brian's relationship once again looked strong – with Megan dismissing her divorce case in 2019 – they have also been very open about their rocky patches throughout their marriage.

Megan has admitted she's "destroyed the house" in arguments with her husband before, and quizzed about her statement on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, she said: "I did one time, I got really angry with him, and I wrote in Sharpie marker a bunch of Nietzsche poems all over his walls."

Brian has also been open about their ups and downs, and in 2017, he told the …With Brian Austin Green podcast: "Marriage is hard. It's work. I think for anyone."

He reportedly added: "I think when you get to the point like we have, where you have kids and you’ve been married for a while and we’ve been together for a long time, you just take it day by day."

Finally over and moving on

The pair first sparked rumours they'd split once again in April this year, when they were pictured seemingly swapping their kids in a Los Angeles car park.

The Sun also exclusively revealed that Megan was quarantined in Calabasas and Brian living in Malibu.

A source said: "They are both very independent and even a bit introverted by nature and love alone time… Because of their personalities, they have changed the nature of their relationship in recent years to spend much more time apart."

In May, Brian confirmed the end of their marriage, admitting Megan will always be his "best friend" but revealed to his listeners the split has left him with "a pit in my stomach".

Speaking on his podcast, he said: "I will always love her. And I know she will always love me and I know as far as a family what we have built is really cool and really special."

However, things have turned frosty since, as Brian appeared to throw shade at his estranged wife in August when she shared a photo with her new boyfriend Machine Gun Kelly.

Brian posted pictures of his four children and captioned the post: "Achingly beautiful boys…… My heart is yours."

It was almost exactly the same caption Megan used in a sexy selfie with her new boyfriend, MGK, real name Richard Colson Baker, with her writing: "Achingly Beautiful Boy… My heart is yours."

Brian told the Hollywood Raw podcast he typically tries to disregard Megan and Machine Gun Kelly's social media pics now.

He shared: "You can if you ignore it and avoid it which is what I try and do…

"I try to no read anything or look at anything and not involve myself in it. Just keep my head down and do what I do and focus on the kids."

He added he wishes her "the absolute best in everything" and that he wants her "to be completely happy, for her, for the kids".
