Here's What We Know About Jennifer Grey's Potential 'Dirty Dancing' Sequel

Nobody puts Baby (or Jennifer Grey) in a corner. A few decades following the release of Dirty Dancing, Lionsgate is creating a sequel with Grey as a producer and actor in the film. Here’s what we know about this upcoming flick.

Jennifer Grey will star in and executive produce this upcoming sequel

It was considered “one of the worst kept secrets in Hollywood.” Now, fans know for sure that they’ll be having the time of their lives, again, with a sequel to the 1980s classic film, Dirty Dancing

“It will be exactly the kind of romantic, nostalgic movie that the franchise’s fans have been waiting for and that [has] made it the biggest-selling library title in the Company’s history,” Lionsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer said during an earnings call, according to Deadline.

The original movie told the story of one dancer, named Baby, who only had a few months of summer to enjoy before joining the Peace Corps. She doesn’t think she’ll find any fun at a sleepy Catskills resort until a local dance instructor picks her as his partner. That’s Johnny Castle, portrayed by Patrick Swayze.

What will this new ‘Dirty Dancing’ movie be about?

It’s been over 30 years since this award-winning movie released. Although a sequel is in the works, its premiere date and production schedule is still unknown.

According to Deadline, “Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine is shepherding the project with Gillian Bohrer from a screenplay by Mikki Daughtry and Tobias Iaconis (Five Feet Apart, The Curse of La Llorona).”

When it comes to the story of this movie, however, the details are still unknown. Although Grey will act in the sequel, it’s unclear if she will reprise her role as “Baby,” or if that story will focus on a new couple entirely.

Patrick Swayze will not be in this ‘Dirty Dancing’ sequel

Although Grey is set to star in this spinoff, her co-star will be noticeably absent, as Swayze died in 2009 of cancer. How the story will change, however, is still to be determined. Grey has since commented on her relationship with this actor.

“It was our second movie we’d done together within a short time — we did Red Dawn first and then Dirty Dancing,” Grey said during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter in 2016.

“He was a great dancer and he was fearless,” she continued. “His fearlessness with my fearfulness… together was like a marriage where you have two opposites. He’d do anything and I’d be scared to do anything.”

More information regarding this potential movie will presumably be announced in the coming months. Until then, the original Dirty Dancing movie is available for streaming with a subscription to HBO or a premium subscription to Hulu.
