Happy Valley spoiler: Catherine and Tommy to ‘clash’ in dramatic Sunday finale

Happy Valley 's Sergeant Catherine Cawood is ready to retire.

But before she surrenders her truncheon she has one last job to do: catch her nemesis Tommy Lee Royce.

The twisted killer, played by James Norton, is on the run and not content with causing the death of Catherine’s daughter Becky, he wants the next most important thing in life – Ryan, her grandson.

Series three has been full of foreshadowing, with fans predicting that Catherine, played by Sarah Lancashire, will never make the retirement party tentatively planned by Joyce.

Wild theories from fans range from Tommy killing Catherine and escaping to Spain, to the more popular fantasy of her killing Royce.

Some think they’ll kill each other, while Tommy’s previous victim, Ann Gallagher, might take revenge. Another suggestion is that Ryan will eventually see through his father’s charm and kill him, finally avenging his mother.

One thing we have been promised is a major clash between Catherine and Tommy.

James says, "They are epic adversaries pitched against each other. They are obsessed with each other, there’s deep, deep hatred. There’s a certain kind of shared experience they have in that they both obsess about each other.

"In that way they are inextricably linked and will always be in some way married together."

And Happy Valley fans are convinced that Alison Garrs, played by Susan Lynch, will play a vital key role in the final ever episode of the hit BBC One police drama

Fans will recall that during the second season, Alison killed her son, Daryl Garrs, after she discovered that he had been murdering sex workers.

And during season three, Alison has made a few appearances after serving her time in prison and has been helping to fix Catherine's truck, which she plans to go travelling in once retiring from the police force.

In one powerful scene, Alison even said to Catherine: "If there's anything I can do for you, you let me know."

Viewers now think that Alison will kill Tommy while protecting Catherine as they insisted that the character was "brought back for a reason".

Taking to Twitter, one person said: "My moneys on the amazing Alison to finish Tommy off in the final moments of next week, she could tell him a nice little story about how theyre going to escape… #HappyValley."

Another follower wrote: "But what about Alison Garrs? Why bring her back? Will she save Catherine? She was brought back for a reason. So many theories #HappyValley."

A different viewer said: "I have absolutely no evidence to support this, but I have a funny feeling Alison ’s going to save the day and kill TLR in the land rover next week #happyvalley."

The finale is a fiercely guarded secret with show creator Sally Wainwright directing concluding scenes with different endings to keep viewers guessing.

And while almost nothing is a given in Happy Valley, there is one thing Sally is certain about.

"We always said this would be the final season and it is very definitely the final season," she says.
