The Great British Bake Off’s infamous bread week was aired on Tuesday (5 October) night and saw Italian baker Giuseppe thrive.

Bakers were tasked with making a classic Italian focaccia, olive ciabatta bread sticks and milk bread.

Jurgen has been crowned as the star baker for GBBO’s first two weeks, but Giuseppe stole his thunder after landing himself one of Paul Hollywood’s much sought-after handshakes, before later going on to be awarded star baker.

Undeniably, GBBO’s bread week is a ‘sink or swim’ moment for most bakers as they’re given just hours to create well-loved loaves, when they would usually give themselves days to do so.

Despite Giuseppe admitting to being one of those people who gives themselves a couple of days to bake his bread, he managed to impress stone-faced Paul Hollywood last night with his ‘Breakfast in Gaeta’ focaccia.

Paul said to the 45-year-old engineer from Bristol upon sampling his bread: “It's really nice. The thing I particularly like is that you haven't gone overboard with flavour and you've made a beautifully light focaccia.”

"I think it's beautiful. Well done. If this is your recipe, you must give it to me,” he added.

A gobsmacked Giuseppe was then met with a famous Hollywood handshake, followed by applause from his fellow bakers.

Addressing the moment afterwards, Giuseppe said to the camera: “I got a little bit emotional back there, I never thought I'd get one.”

Giuseppe also baked first-place winning ciabatta bread sticks that Paul described as ‘delicious’.

GBBO viewers were equally as excited as Giueseppe at him getting a handshake and being hailed star baker. One person tweeted: “GIUSEPPE IS THRIVING HE DESERVES THIS #GBBO.”

Another said: “There’s no way Giuseppe could not have been star baker, he literally done amazingly well for every task today.”

A third wrote: “Giuseppe getting overwhelmed after a handshake and being asked for his recipe Paul I LOVE HIM PROTECT GIUSEPPE.”

While the Italian baker came up top last night, 27-year-old junior HR business partner Rochia was sent home.

She follows Jairzeno, who left in week two, and Tom, who was the first to leave.
