Today is the day — the beginning of the end, the premiere of Supernatural‘s 15th and final season. And basically, fans are super not okay. The beloved CW show, headlined by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, is gearing up for the last 20 episodes. But, of course, it wouldn’t be the Supernatural fandom if viewers didn’t make their endgame predictions ahead of the highly anticipated season premiere. So how will Supernatural end? If fans have their way, it looks like Sam and Dean will have a wild ride ahead of them.
Sam and Dean retire after ‘Supernatural’ ends
Many fans seem to want the Winchester brothers to receive a happy ending and retire when the credits start rolling in the series finale. In a discussion board on Reddit, some viewers took the time to predict the perfect goodbye for their favorite characters.
“I’d love for Sam & Dean to ‘retire,’” a Reddit user explained. “Quotations because they wouldn’t be actively hunting, but they’d still be in the business. Maybe Dean gets that bar he always wanted and makes it into a Roadhouse like what Ellen had. Sam could become like Bobby, being a leader & helper to other hunters, providing information, weapons, tools, etc.”
Another fan then proposed the perfect ending scene, “with the brothers driving off together in the Impala, and Castiel returning to heaven.”
Sam and Dean die to make the ultimate sacrifice for humanity
Nevertheless, a happy ending didn’t sit well with other fans. Many seemed to think a bittersweet finale is more fitting for the Winchester brothers. On Reddit, one user hypothesized Supernatural will conclude with the riddance of all supernatural creatures and the “deaths” of Sam and Dean. The Redditor shared:
Destroying the big bad results in all his stories and creations creating to exist. Monster, demons, angels, everything supernatural, and of course, Sam and Dean. Leaving plain old unexciting humans left behind, those who the stories were written around but we’re never part of them. Sam and Dean make the ultimate sacrifice, this time together. Carry on my wayward son plays to a montage of all the creations, all the major characters throughout fading out of existence, ending with the brothers as they give one another a final hug before disappearing.
Other fans seem to think Supernatural can still end on a happy note, even if Sam and Dean are dead.
“I’d love a happy ending but I agree that a bittersweet one is likely,” a fan explained. “And I’d be okay with them in heaven, in a reunion with Mary and John, then Cas and Jack are frequent dinner guests.” And then another user pointed out Sam and Dean’s heaven reunion would be a great finish for “there’ll be peace when you are done.”
How the ‘Supernatural’ cast feels about the show’s ending
Padalecki and Ackles have always wanted Supernatural to end with the death of Sam and Dean — and that hasn’t changed. At Comic-Con 2019, the two actors echoed their hopes for the series finale.
“I always said I wanted them both to die,” Padalecki said, according to TVLine. “I always said [like] Butch and Sundance, and people would yell at me and throw stuff.”
That said, Padalecki doesn’t necessarily want a sad ending. “I think that was my way of saying I want them to achieve peace,” the actor explained. “I feel like Sam and Dean find some version of peace. Whether or not that’s alive or dead, or if Amara possesses me or whatever the situation is, I feel like they find more peace than when the season starts.”
Meanwhile, Ackles confirmed his satisfaction with the ending of the series. But, it looks like it wasn’t an easy journey. Per TVLine, he said:
When we were in the room and the idea came down the pipe, everybody was kind of signed off on it. My reaction was more like, ‘OK, OK.’ I struggled with it for about a week or so, and then I realized I’m too invested, I’m too emotional. I’m too close to this character. To see anything with finality on it, it’s just hard to digest. I talked to a few people about it and got some clarity on it and have tried to look at it from a different perspective. I, now, have come around to being like, ‘This is a really good ending. This is satisfying.’
Regardless of what happens when the final season of Supernatural comes to an end, fans will hopefully receive a gratifying finish. If not, there will definitely be hell to pay. However, after 13 years of phenomenal content, we have faith in the writers of the beloved CW series. So at this point, let’s just hope no one ends up in the Empty.
