It’s Christmas in Walford and the misery is in full swing at the Slaters’, following Alfie Moon’s unexpected plunge down the staircase.
Stunned Kat is torn between heartbreak and rage as she rushes to help her husband – despite having just discovered that he has fathered a baby with her young cousin.
And, with Alfie feared dead, it is tearful Hayley who bears the brunt of Kat’s fury in the Boxing Day episode of EastEnders.
As Stacey tries desperately to calm her down, Kat lunges at Hayley, placing her hands menacingly around the youngster’s neck.
Actress Jessie Wallace says her character simply can’t control herself in the aftermath. “She’s so angry and upset, there’s this whole whirlwind of emotions that she’s going through and she just doesn’t care.
"There’s no vision, Kat’s just so angry and betrayed.”
She says her character started Christmas Day feeling better than she had done in ages, thanks to the return of Alfie and her sons to Albert Square.
“I think she just wants her family to all be together at Christmas,” she explains. “She’s absolutely ecstatic to have her boys back because there’s been a huge gap where they’ve not been there. She feels like she missed out.
She is very much hoping that Alfie, played by Shane Richie, lives to fight another day. “I love Shane, we’re like soulmates, he’s like my brother. I love him so, so much and when he wasn’t here I missed him like crazy.”
Things first bubbled over when Stacey Fowler (Lacey Turner) caught Alfie and Hayley kissing in secret.
Having had their secret exposed, Hayley then became overwhelmed as tensions reached breaking point, snapping and pushing Alfie down the stairs.
In scenes that will air in the follow-up episode, Kat tries to come to terms with everything that has happened but struggles to keep it together.
Worrying that Hayley has killed Alfie, she explodes and jumps on Hayley, putting her hands around her throat in a heated altercation.
EastEnders airs at 8.30pm on Boxing Day on BBC1.
