Corrie icon heaps praise on 'outstanding' husband for acid attack episode

Julie Hesmondhalgh, Coronation Street star

Coronation Street legend Julie Hesmondhalgh has praised her husband, Ian Kershaw, who wrote Monday’s edition of the ITV soap, which saw Justin Rutherford (Andrew Still) attack Ryan Connor (Ryan Prescott) with acid.

Stalker Justin returned to Weatherfield with the intention of making Daisy (Charlotte Jordan) the victim but when he threw the liquid in her direction, Ryan jumped in front of her.

As Justin left, Daisy had to call the emergency services and drag Ryan to the shower, hoping the cold water would be enough to save at least some of the facial tissue.

The episode was praised heavily by Coronation Street viewers and Julie, best known for her role as Hayley Cropper, of course.

‘Away from home and only able to watch clips of tonight’s #Corrie, written by my incredible husband @IanKershaw. Weeping in a park in America. Outstanding work from cast and crew and director and Kersh. Just phenomenal’, she wrote on Twitter.

‘It’s not all black and white, there’s a lot of room for creativeness around it and I think he naturally writes like that. The scripts were great, I think they’re amazing.’

After her exit from Corrie, Julie has gone on to appear in a variety of different TV shows including BBC One’s The Pact, she also portrayed Trish Winterman in ITV’s Broadchurch and played Heather in series 3 of The A Word, which followed an autistic boy called Joe (Max Vento) as he navigated growing up, going to school and dealing with his parents’ separation.
