The couple fought against their all instincts to fall in love, after it was revealed Clayton – who murdered David’s wife Kylie – was Shona’s son.
The twisted killer has been locked up in Weatherfield nick for his crime and but in recent weeks has been in contact with Shona.
But unbeknown to her, Clayton is planning on using his mum to start smuggling drugs into the prison.
Corrie boss Iain McLeod told The Sun Online: “Clayton will rear his ugly head again and will throw a massive spanner in the works for David and Shona.
“He tries to embroil Shona in a plot to smuggle drugs into prison.
“Shona and Clayton’s relationship throws her and David’s relationship – it’s the biggest challenge to them.”
On asked why he decided to bring Clayton back into the fold, Iain added: “David is going out with the mother of the boy who killed his wife, it’s so huge we thought it was worth going into this more.
“It’s going to be big and it’s going to get very gritty.”
Despite knowing Clayton killed Kylie, David, played by Jack P. Shepherd couldn’t help his feelings toward Shona and their relationship blossomed.
More recently, Shona helped David after he was raped by Josh Tucker and the couple have seemed blissfully happy ever since.
Actress Julia Goulding, who plays Shona, recently said she was hoping the pair could face anything but admitted their relationship was unlikely to stay perfect for long.
She explained: “I’d like to see David and Shona stay together for a long time.
“With soaps we don’t often see relationships stand the test of time so I want to find out where they could go. But there’s not as much drama in the happy times…”
