Coronation Street hit by ‘ovengate’ mystery as real life gaffe ends up in show

Coronation Street has been hit with a big “ovengate” mystery.

One of the cast bought a fancy new stove for his wife as a birthday gift – and she hit the roof.

When soap bosses got wind of the embarrassing story they stole the idea for a plotline.

Viewers recently saw Sarah Barlow (Tina O’Brien) go red with rage when hubby Adam bought her an oven for her birthday.

Only a few know who the story was based on – and fans will be left with a guessing game.

Actress Tina said: “Somebody at our work did that for their wife and that is how it ended up in the story.

“Obviously it didn’t go down very well. I won’t say who.

“Personally I would not like a present of an oven. It’s a home appliance.

“On the show Sarah thinks, ‘He’s got me an oven for my birthday and that is not very romantic’.”

Tina has revealed that although she has never been given an oven as a gift, she was once presented with an awkward present by a fellow cast member.

She added: “I once received a tea making machine the same as one at work.

“They said, ‘Look, you can have the same tea at home’. I thought, ‘Oh no!’”

This comes after Corrie's Kimberly Hart-Simpson said she is targeted by trolls over her sexuality after an appearance on Celebs Go Dating.

The Nicky Wheatley actress, 35, told the Sunday People : "I’ve had a couple of memes. Me holding a Tefal pan, because I’m ‘pan-sexual’, but that’s all right.

"People saying it’s a stunt are not my problem. That’s their problem."

In 2020, in an interview on Lorraine, she came out as bisexual when she explained that the year before, she designed a rainbow-themed dress for actress Jessica Ellis for the British Soap Awards.

Speaking to the Scottish sweetheart she said: "We were representing the LGBTQ community and I'm part of that as well. I represent the B. So for me to do that was really, really important."
