Cameron Diaz Talks About the Karaoke Scene That 'Traumatized' Her in My Best Friend's Wedding

She wasn’t exactly the best singer—but her terrible vocals just made Kimberly (Cameron Diaz) all the more endearing to her groom-to-be Michael (Dermot Mulroney) in the 1997 hit rom-com My Best Friend’s Wedding.

Now Diaz, who reunited with the cast of My Best Friend’s Wedding—including Julia Roberts, 50, and Rupert Everett, 59 — for the cover of the latest Entertainment Weekly, is remembering just how traumatizing filming that scene actually was.

“I just wanted to run and hide,” Diaz, 46, tells PEOPLE and Entertainment Weekly editorial director Jess Cagle of singing the Dusty Springfield hit, “I Just Don’t Know What to Do With Myself.” “Dermot kept me there, kept whispering, ‘You can do it, you can do it!’” She adds, “I’m kind of traumatized by it.”

Diaz says that they had to do the scene so many times, and each time she felt anxious about it. But the reunited cast laughed about how the scene turned around for poor Kimberly when the rest of the bar sang along and supported her.

Everett points out that it left Julia alone and isolated in her “plotting” to bring Diaz’s character down.

Roberts replied, “You were plotting with me!”
