Starz series Outlander is known for being action-packed with its main characters Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe) put in precarious situations. The show has put its characters through the wringer over years. But how much have the acting duo actually done in terms of stunts?

Does Claire Fraser star Caitriona Balfe do her own stunts?

Balfe has previously spoken about how much stunt work she’s allowed to do.

She told Entertainment Weekly in 2017: “Half the time they won’t let me do as much as I want to.”

The Irish actress went on to say: “They end up using stunt doubles for insurance purposes, but I think Sam [Heughan] and I — and Tobias [Menzies] actually — we all like to get physical and we like the challenges of the physical elements of the job.”

She also said in a Twitter Q&A from 2014 about the percentage of stunts she was allowed to: “As much as they will let me do.

“And then I have an amazing stunt double called Annabelle does the rest.”

Scottish model Kirstin Gribbin previously stood in for Balfe in season three.

Gribbin even shared a snap of herself and another stunt performer for Sam Heughan, who was dressed in a Jamie Fraser costume with the Scotsman’s trademark red hair.

While Balfe doesn’t get to do many scenes in Outlander, partly due to Claire steering away from danger usually, she did get the opportunity some stunts.

During season four, Claire had to jump off the side of a ship as she fled and tried to be reunited with Jamie.

Balfe had to jump from the side of the ship onto a cherry picker aloft in the air with a crash mat on it with a 15ft to 20ft drop.

She was filming on a set in South Africa back in 2016 and said of the experience: “I did some rehearsals when we got there.”

The star went on to explain: “I was doing my jumps and climbing back up. It was really fun.

“It’s not an insignificant jump and you’re landing on a cherry picker, which is up in the air.

“They always want to make sure that everything’s done safely so I won’t break a leg and shut down production.”

Balfe said season four was one of the most “physically intensive” seasons of Outlander with Claire getting washed ashore or trekking through a tropical jungle.

She admitted she “relished the chance to get down and dirty” because it was something of a departure for Claire.

When she was first cast in Outlander, Balfe was required to have horse riding lessons to get her up to speed with the part.

Season one saw Claire on horseback quite a lot after she ended up accidentally falling through time.

Comparatively, Heughan does most of his own scenes with the actor admitting he likes to do them as much as possible.

While Heughan has had stunt doubles, by and large he will be the one in shot on the camera.

The only times Heughan has had to let a stunt performer stand in is if there is an element of danger.
