Brit Awards 2020: Jack Whitehall's best one-liners – from Lizzo to Harry Styles

Jack Whitehall was back for a third year to present the Brit Awards 2020 – and no one was safe in his annual roast of music’s most loved artists.

After starting the show with a poignant tribute to Caroline Flack, which led into a performance of Lewis Capaldi singing Someone You Loved, Jack made playful jabs at the expense of those in attendance.

From being stunned at Lizzo’s ability to neck tequila to managing to keep the rowdy stars at bay as the drinks kept flowing, the show proved to be a triumph even with his cheeky commentary.

Here are just some of the best one-liners he got in during the ceremony…

  • [On Billie Eilish] ‘She’s the only teenager in the world that makes Greta Thunberg look lazy!’
  • [On his presenting skills] ‘We have nine awards in total and in between i’m going to pop up every now and again, to annoy you all like Chris Martin at Glastonbury.’

  • [On Ronnie Wood] ‘He is an inspiration to caners everywhere. The horny scarecrow of rock and roll.’
  • [Introducing Niall Horan] ‘He was a member of one of the greatest bands of all time. Zayn Malik, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Harry Styles. We are so honoured to have him here tonight. Ladies and gentleman, please welcome… the other one.
  • [Introducing Lizzo] ‘This lady has taught us to love ourselves just the way we are, she’s the queen of not giving a damn… and with Royal spots opening up every day now, it won’t be long until she’s our actual queen. All hail to Lizzo.’

  • [Introducing best female artist] ‘In the spirit of sustainability, the Brits has been recycling all the same excuses for why so few women were nominated. In this category, though, they didn’t have a choice.’

The Brit Awards 2020 were held at London’s O2 Arena on Tuesday night, bringing the biggest and best of the UKs music scene together to celebrate their achievements.

Lewis Capaldi was the biggest winner of the night, taking home two awards – best new artist, and song of the year for Someone You Loved.

His first acceptance speech was blocked from being heard by ITV viewers as it was before the watershed, but the second saw him finally clarify that his hit track was not, actually, about Love Island’s Paige Turley, but his grandmother.

Other iconic moments included Lizzo necking a full glass of tequila like an absolute champion, and becoming besties with Harry Styles, who left viewers in tears after an emotional performance of track Falling.

There were also some political statements made throughout the evening, with Tyler, The Creator dedicating his award to Theresa May after almost barring him from the country.

Dave also used his moment on stage to talk about the UK political climate, branding Boris Johnson a racist and paying tribute to the Grenfell victims, who after three years still need housing.

The Brit Awards are now available on ITV Player.
